As we consider health care reform in the U.S., it raises a few questions for me. What is
Medical insurance like in Europe. I know so little about
International health insurance, but it seems like what they are doing there may help us here. Do any of you know how the system works in European countries? Do you see anything there that look…

Indiana open heart surgery is still a very invasive procedure that requires cracking the ribs. Research that we did last summer about
International medical insurance revealed that in Europe,…

The Washington Monthly
In his blog, crossoverHealth, Scott Shreeve, M.D., produced a review of Phillip Longman's article, "Code Red---How Software Companies can Screw Up Obama's Reform Plan", in the July/August 2009 Washington Monthly. Shreeve's review seems to endorse Longman's central thought: that it would be a tragic error to fund health care information technology only to cement in place isolated silos of discontinuity and poor interconnectivity.

I recently launched a website that has The HIPAA Survival Guide (HSG) viewable online. The HSG is a concise overview of the HIPAA Regulations in light of the new HITECH Act (part of President Obama's recent economic stimulus package.) I thought I'd pass it on in hopes it might be useful to some of you.
The entire contents of the guide are available online here:

After the leadership meeting today, a tormenting question came into my mind; "what else could I do to help the hospital recover from its reputation from bad to great?" The Director of Patient Relation's voice still is echoing in my brain; "the physicians will not admit patients to this hospital because the 'care' is not up to par, the nursing staff are not skillful enough to carry on with their responsibilities, therefore, they feel it is unsafe to bring patients here."
As I ponder, I was re-ev…

As we're all aware, it's tough going financially and only promises to get tougher in the coming year or two. While many of you are working on large, long-term projects that will undoubtedly yield great benefit to you and your patients, putting some materials management basics into practice now can have a significant impact on margins in weeks -- rather than years. I've seen providers able to save as much as $50 million annually, even with increased volume, simply by only buying the best of what…

In 1993, Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles wrote another book in their series of short reads covering the "One Minute Manager" to organizing for greater corporate efficiency. One of their best selling titles, "Raving Fans, Revolution in Customer Service" caught the interest of many of us in the service sector.
In the classic marketing behavior model, our job as brand-builders is to move customers from awareness of our product/service to loyal users. Along the way, we create preference, likeline…

With the holidays approaching, it's a time of reflection and pondering. While some of us will be snuggling up with our significant other under the Christmas tree, and others celebrating it with little ones running around the house - waiting to open Santa's gifts, and others with friends and carols, we often forget those that will be spending their holidays on Floor 5W, room 13.
Some will be celebrating with a little Christmas tree on the table, next to the heart monitor and vitals machine. Some…

One of the biggest challenges for hospitals in the next few years will be how to adapt to growing consumer demand for more, better and safer information technology. It's hard enough to adopt electronic medical records in the inpatient setting alone. Many, if not most, of our institutions still have hybrid records, part paper and part electronic. Costs are multiplied in this intermediate stage: we have the cost of buying and supporting the electronic record, while still tracking and copying all t…
